Come learn about the importance of some of the great voices in jazz who just happen to be women! Debbie Darling will also be performing a medley of their smash hits accompanied by piano.
The role that African American women played in the history of jazz has, from its inception, often been omitted from the larger narrative. Black women fought harsh stereotypes levied against their gender, race, musical abilities and basic rights to exist, much less perform. Debbie Darling will introduce you to five iconic jazz vocal mavens who broke through barriers to pave the way for some of our favorite artists of today. Through this musical introspective on the lives of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughn and Dinah Washington, you will get a glimpse into the lives of five amazing women whose tenacity and determination forever changed the face of jazz.
