WordPlay

A new, peer-led creative writing group at the Writer’s Center, meeting the first Sunday of every month.

If you enjoy writing but don’t know what to write about or are concerned you don't have writing experience, then this group is for you. Join us for a fun afternoon of exploration and playing with the magic of the written word. We all have an inner artist and writing is one of the best ways to express it.

You will be given a prompt—such as a phrase, a sentence, an image--and then you'll be given time to create and see what unfolds. It might be a poem, an idea for a movie, or the lyrics to a song—whatever. It might even lead to a piece that you can later add to your portfolio, or it could prove to be the inspiration for something bigger, you never know!

In addition, you will learn a simple 3-step process so that you can continue to connect to your inner artist at home.

It is open to adults only. No prior writing experience is needed. Registration is optional.

The Co-Facilitators:

Sri Rahm is an amateur writer who gets joy out of crafting sentences. He kept his day job as a corporate trainer while writing and attending writing/publishing workshops and conferences; he has one published short story and one published book, and he is getting two more books ready for printing. In addition to creative writing, he has done a lot of business writing and marketing copy over the years.

Deb Bradt is a certified Yoga Teacher, writer, mother and trauma survivor and is passionate about empowering others to find the artist within. She has a special love for poetry and is working on her first non-fiction book project. Deb has been dealing with depression and chronic pain for many years and has found that creativity eases her symptoms and helps her find comfort and peace, even in her lowest moments. She is also an entrepreneur and the creator of the “Purple Butterfly Project," a program designed to help prevent the spread of suicide. She is planning to open a non-profit in the Cleveland area.

Andrew Sykaluk is a graphic designer and writer. Andrew first found his love for art in a vocational program entitled Interactive Media. He completed his Administrative Office Systems degree in 2014 but realized that working in an administrative capacity lacked the gratification that creativity provided him. He decided to go back to school and graduated in 2019. He is looking forward to a fulfilling career in graphic design and is currently writing his first book, a true story based on his brother’s struggle with cystic fibrosis.
