A staged and costumed production of Schumann’s song cycles: "Dichterliebe" and "Frauenliebe und Leben" sung in the original German with English translation projected.
Through a breathtaking music of Schumann set to deeply Romantic poetry of Heinrich Heine and Adalbert von Chamisso, this production tells two stories of life and love: one by a man, one by a woman. The man is a young poet, whose poetic imagination paints a collection of images symbolizing powerful emotions. The other cycle of songs represents the milestones in a woman’s life: her love, her marriage, a child and the death of her husband. In The Cleveland Opera’s unique production, those two stories are set next to each other, diving into the deepest recesses of human heart, and thus revealing two perspectives on reality: a life (not) together.
