About the author:
Julia Claiborne Johnson is the author of the bestselling Be Frank with Me (2016), a finalist for the American Bookseller’s Association Best Debut Novel Award. She grew up on a farm in Tennessee before moving to New York City, where she worked at Mademoiselle and Glamour magazines. She now lives in Los Angeles with her comedy-writer husband and their two children.
In her dazzling new novel, Better Luck Next Time, Julia Claiborne Johnson transports readers to 1938 Reno, NV, home to the “Reno Cure.” At a time when divorce was frowned upon, unhappy women could travel to Reno to get a divorce with no questions asked and no judgement made, making Reno the divorce capital of the country.
24-year-old Ward is a ranch hand at the Flying Leap—a dude ranch where rich and mostly female clientele come to stay for the six weeks required to qualify for a Nevada divorce. Ward has always been popular with the ranch’s female visitors, but two new arrivals to the Flying Leap throw Ward’s life into disarray.
Wealthy, dynamic Nina and unassuming housewife Emily initially seem to have little in common, but they quickly become inseparable, drawing Ward into their circle to form an unexpected friendship. But when Ward begins to have feelings for one of the women, the cracks in their tightly knit group begin to show, and the reverberations will change Ward, Emily, and Nina’s lives forever.
