Join us for a presentation by Dr. John Grabowski.
When Moses Cleaveland and his surveyors laid out the plans for the town that would bear his name, they envisioned a rather homogeneous community that would mirror the towns of New England. Now, nearly 226 years later we celebrate Northeastern Ohio as a large diverse region representing well over 100 nationalities and ethnic identities, the origins of which span the globe.
This illustrated lecture will chronicle the history of migration and immigration to Greater Cleveland and look closely at the factors --local, national, and international -- that drew people to the area and examine their impact on the economy, landscape, and culture of the region. It is, at its core, a story about people, but also a story about laws, shifting economies, bias, and acceptance – and it is, most importantly, a story that continues today.
