Author Janet Beard will visit to discuss The Atomic City Girls, a historical fiction novel about the everyday people who worked on the Manhattan Project during WW II.
Janet Beard is the author of The Atomic City Girls, a compelling novel about the community that toiled in secrecy to help keep the country safe during World War II. Growing up in east Tennessee in the shadow of Oak Ridge with a grandmother who worked on the Manhattan Project, Beard was always intrigued by the proximity of the construction site of the atomic bomb.
In her wartime novel, Beard animates this lifelong fascination, bringing the untold story of the women and men who relocated to Oak Ridge hedging their bets on a better future while often remaining largely ignorant of the project’s purpose.
