Join the local literary community to honor James Baldwin (1924-1987)—iconic American writer and civil rights activist—on the occasion of his 100th birthday.
Literary Cleveland, The Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, and Cuyahoga County Public Library partner to host a community celebration in honor of James Baldwin. Toni Morrison wrote of Baldwin: "Yours was the courage to live life in and from its belly as well as beyond its edges, to see and say what it was, to recognize and identify evil but never fear or stand in awe of it."
Host Kenyon Farrow and featured readers Danielle N. Dixon, Jamie Hickner, Dr. Gillian Johns, Dr. Brenda R. Smith, Zachary Thomas, Zuggie Tate, RA Washington, and Willow Watson will share special tributes to the author, followed by an open mic during which program attendees can share readings from Baldwin’s work and original writings influenced by Baldwin (please keep readings to under 1,000 words).
