This talk looks at the changing role and image of First Lady by an examination of her fashion choices and the public’s response. In particular the talk focuses on four women who have occupied the White House: Jacqueline Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Michelle Obama. Questions about who pays for the first ladies’ wardrobes has been fraught since the days of Mary Todd Lincoln. The pressure to choose American designers has also shaped the public image of the first lady. The evolving fashion choices of the first ladies reflects profound changes in women’s role in society. Sponsored by the Friends of the Olmsted Falls Library.
