Join librarians from Orange and Beachwood branches as we explore the work of award-winning author Percival Everett in this 4-week, in depth discussion series.
Everett is a Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Southern California who has written in numerous genres, including western fiction, mysteries, thrillers, satire and philosophical fiction. His work is often satirical and aimed at exploring race and identity issues in the United States.
For this series, we will be asking participants to read from multiple titles by the author. Much attention will be paid to his most recent book, James, a reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, told from the enslaved Jim's point of view. It won the 2024 National Book Award for Fiction. The program will also sample other texts from Everett's large body of work.
A syllabus with details on weekly topics and readings will be e-mailed to all registered participants prior to the first discussion.
Copies of James and other selected texts will be held on reserve at the Orange and Beachwood branches starting March 1st.
