Come join us for fun, hands-on activities that let you get close to the action! Be prepared to get in and get messy. Led by volunteers from the American Chemical Society. For those in 2nd-6th grade.
Attention students in grades 2 - 6! Join us for fun, hands-on activities that let you get close to the action! Be prepared to get in and get messy. This year, in partnership with the American Chemical Society's Cleveland Section, we are offering identical virtual and in-person programs to foster interest in science and chemistry. Students are invited to register for either the At-Home or Virtual Program, but not both.
The program is a contest consisting of fun, age-appropriate chemistry experiments. Students will answers questions at the end of each experiment and then submit these answers along with a picture of an item to be created by them for judging via the Library’s website.
Parental involvement is considered essential for the At-home Virtual Program. Registration for both programs must be completed and submitted by September 30. Participation is limited to the first 240 entrants online and 250 total in-person registrants (the first 25 at each of the 10 branch locations listed below.) One registration per entry, please.
Participants in the At-home, Virtual Program will need to provide white vinegar, baking soda, school glue, unflavored gelatin and a set of four food coloring dyes. Other hard-to-find materials will be provided for free for the virtual participants during the week of October 10 - 15 in kits from the branch where the student registered. Students will perform the experiments for the Virtual Program at home during National Chemistry Week, October 16 – 22, and immediately thereafter. At-home contest submissions must be submitted between October 16 – 31, only. The In-Person Program will be conducted at the branch where the student registered on the date specified by that branch, and all necessary materials will be provided.
Prizes will be awarded to the top three submissions in each grade. Winners will be announced as soon as possible after November 6.
