Join us for a career retrospective of Stephen Sondheim, one of the greatest composers and lyricists of the 20th century.
Beloved by audiences and performers alike for their wit, vulnerability and searing insight, the works of Stephen Sondheim changed the landscape of American musical theater in the 20th century. Within Sondheim’s intricate lyrics and rhyme schemes are a boundless creativity for the possibilities of the dramatic medium and a fascination with the emotional complexities of the human condition.
This program will explore the career and musicals of Stephen Sondheim, from the razor-sharp exploits of Sweeney Todd to the lessons learned on each journey Into the Woods, with a focus on Bobby’s alienation and search for connection in Company.

The Independence Branch began as a collection operated out of City Hall. After outgrowing that space, the library moved into its own facility and since 1992 the branch has been a part of the city’s municipal complex that includes a recreational facility and senior center.
