Most authors are familiar with the adage "write what you know," but what does that mean when it comes to social identity issues?
Can writing that crosses identities can be responsible and effective?
Male and female writers often write across gender lines, but what about gender fluid characters and other aspects of identity like economic class, ethnicity, race, or sexual orientation? This session will encourage writers to consider relevant social issues and concerns about writing across social identities and will involve a consideration of methods for developing characters that reflect the diverse world.
E. F. Schraeder writes poetry and speculative fiction. Schraeder's creative work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies including the HWA Poetry Showcase, Dark Voices, The Literary Hatchet, Lavender Review, The Feminist Wire, and others. Schraeder is also the author of two poetry chapbooks, most recently Chapter Eleven (Partisan Press). Dr. Schraeder holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. emphasizing ethics and social philosophy and is currently at work on a queer monster's coming of age novella and a full length manuscript of poems.
